Physicals
Physicals are medical exams that are often required for children to attend school, camp, or to play a sport. These examinations are common and vary depending on the reason why the physical is required. If your child needs a physical for entry into school, camp, or a sport, we encourage you to see the pediatric providers at Care+ Pediatrics Urgent Care. Our board-certified pediatrician and entire team of pediatric providers accept walk-in appointments, allowing you to get your child’s physical performed at your convenience.
School Physicals vs. Camp Physicals vs. Sports Physicals
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends school-aged children receive physicals yearly. Each physical, while different in nature, assesses your child’s overall well-being. Physicals may detect an underlying disease in your child, like a heart murmur, asthma, or diabetes.
There are three different physicals the pediatric providers at Care+ Pediatrics Urgent Care perform:
School physicals address your child’s overall well-being, including matters that aren’t necessarily related to sports or camp. This comprehensive medical examination is often required by schools upon entry and should be performed at least once a year to ensure your child is healthy. Not only does an annual physical exam consider your child’s physical health, but it can also help to monitor your child’s psychological health and social well-being.
Camp physicals are similar to school physicals as they address matters that are related to a child’s physical, social, and psychological well-being. Camp physicals differ, however, in their consideration of your child’s ability to participate in camp-related activities. This may include aspects that relate to their ability to participate in a specific sport. The pediatric providers at Care+ Pediatrics Urgent Care recommend your child receives a camp physical each year before they enroll in a camp, whether it is required or not.
Sports physicals are physical examinations that are often required to determine whether it is safe for the child to participate in the sport. Because sports physicals are more “physical” in nature, these examinations may determine whether your child has asthma or another underlying condition that may affect their participation in the sport. While sports physicals are more limited in their testing, they are more specific to the sport your child will be participating in.
What to Expect During a Physical
Whether your child is receiving a sports physical, a camp physical, or a school physical, there are two different portions of the examination that your child can anticipate: the medical history and the physical exam.
Medical History
When taking your child’s medical history, you will be asked a series of questions about your family’s history with medical conditions like asthma, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart conditions, and more. With these answers, we can be sure to keep an eye out for symptoms your child may be having pertaining to those conditions.

We will also ask your child if they have a past of experiencing shortness of breath, chest pain, or fatigue while playing sports with their friends or at school. These experiences may also be a sign your child has an underlying condition.
In the event your child has an underlying condition, our expert pediatric providers can work with your primary pediatrician to ensure your child gets the right course of treatment.
Physical Exam
The physical examination portion of the physical is much more hands-on than the medical history portion. Throughout this part of the physical, one of our highly skilled pediatric providers may:
- Determine your child’s height and weight
- Take your child’s pulse and blood pressure
- Check your child’s heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, and throat
- Evaluate your child’s posture, joints, and flexibility
- Check your child’s reflexes
After your child’s physical, our pediatric providers will be able to determine whether your child is fit for participating in physical activities in school, at camp, or while playing sports. In the event an underlying condition is detected, we will be sure to notify your primary pediatrician and provide a referral to a specialist if needed.
